After Completion

After Completion: success enters a maintenance phase where small failures matter again

水火既济Classical Chinese included
Translation approach

The Chinese source stays visible. Where an editorial close rendering is available, it stays near the wording before Astro I Ching expands into cultural interpretation. Why we separate these layers →

CLASSICAL CHINESE

The source anchor

Read the source first. The English layer below remains accountable to these passages rather than replacing them with a simplified verdict.

卦辞 · Judgment
既济:亨,小利贞,初吉终乱。
Close rendering

After Completion: success. In small matters, favorable to remain correct. At the beginning good fortune; at the end disorder.

《大象》 · Image
水在火上,既济;君子以思患而豫防之。
Close rendering

Water above Fire: After Completion. The noble person therefore thinks of trouble and prepares against it in advance.

How to read the middle layer

Close rendering stays near wording and sequence. It is not presented as the only possible translation; the cultural reading below is where Astro I Ching explains image, structure, and practical logic in fuller English.

The source includes “seven days” and “three years.” These are preserved as classical temporal phrases rather than converted into literal modern timing claims.

ASTRO I CHING · CULTURAL READING

Why this hexagram says what it says

Cultural reading of the image

Water stands above Fire in a pattern of mutual regulation. Ji Ji presents a structure whose parts have temporarily reached their proper positions.

Cultural reading of the judgment

Completion is not the end of the story but the beginning of maintenance. The closer a system is to stability, the more consequential small leaks, complacency, and overconfidence become.

SIX LINES · ONE STORY

How the hexagram develops from bottom to top

Line 1 · 初九
Classical Chinese
曳其轮,濡其尾,无咎。
Close rendering

Drag the wheels; the tail gets wet. No blame.

Cultural reading

Immediately after crossing, deliberately reducing speed can prevent momentum from damaging the new order.

Line 2 · 六二
Classical Chinese
妇丧其茀,勿逐,七日得。
Close rendering

The woman loses her carriage curtain. Do not chase it; after seven days it is recovered.

Cultural reading

A temporarily missing component does not always need to be chased; some losses resolve as the cycle settles.

Line 3 · 九三
Classical Chinese
高宗伐鬼方,三年克之,小人勿用。
Close rendering

Gaozong campaigns against the Guifang and overcomes them after three years. Do not employ petty people.

Cultural reading

Even after success, large campaigns can consume years. “Already completed” does not make every person or system fit for every challenge.

Line 4 · 六四
Classical Chinese
繻有衣袽,终日戒。
Close rendering

There are rags available to plug leaks. Remain on guard all day.

Cultural reading

Small leaks are most dangerous after completion because success encourages relaxation; maintenance is part of stability.

Line 5 · 九五
Classical Chinese
东邻杀牛,不如西邻之禴祭,实受其福。
Close rendering

The eastern neighbor slaughters an ox, yet this is not equal to the western neighbor’s simple offering, which truly receives the blessing.

Cultural reading

What preserves achievement is not always larger ceremony but appropriate, sincere, and repeated investment.

Line 6 · 上六
Classical Chinese
濡其首,厉。
Close rendering

The head becomes wet. Danger.

Cultural reading

When water rises over the head, the state of completion has already generated a new danger; success and restraint meet again.

BRING IT BACK TO LIFE

What this can help you notice

Useful immediately after success, migration, launch, or agreement when maintenance, monitoring, and small leaks become the new work.

A common misreading

After Completion is not “finished forever.” The whole point is that maintenance begins as soon as completion appears.

Keep the classical text and the interpretive layer separate: one is the source, the other is Astro I Ching's explanation of how the source can be read.
