Coming to Meet

Coming to meet: reading the small new force before it reshapes the whole system

Translation approach

The Chinese source stays visible. Where an editorial close rendering is available, it stays near the wording before Astro I Ching expands into cultural interpretation. Why we separate these layers →

CLASSICAL CHINESE

The source anchor

Read the source first. The English layer below remains accountable to these passages rather than replacing them with a simplified verdict.

卦辞 · Judgment
姤:女壮,勿用取女。
Close rendering

Coming to Meet: the woman is strong. Do not take such a woman as wife.

《大象》 · Image
天下有风,姤;后以施命诰四方。
Close rendering

Wind below Heaven: Coming to Meet. The ruler therefore issues commands and proclaims them to the four directions.

How to read the middle layer

Close rendering stays near wording and sequence. It is not presented as the only possible translation; the cultural reading below is where Astro I Ching explains image, structure, and practical logic in fuller English.

ASTRO I CHING · CULTURAL READING

Why this hexagram says what it says

Cultural reading of the image

A single yielding line enters beneath five firm lines. Gou emphasizes sudden encounter and the importance of early boundaries around a new influence.

Cultural reading of the judgment

Not every powerful attraction, invitation, or opportunity should become a long-term bond. The key question is what this new factor will do once it is inside the system.

SIX LINES · ONE STORY

How the hexagram develops from bottom to top

Line 1 · 初六
Classical Chinese
系于金柅,贞吉,有攸往,见凶,羸豕孚踟躅。
Close rendering

Fasten it to a metal brake. Constancy brings good fortune. If it is allowed to keep moving, misfortune appears; like a lean pig restless and sure to move.

Cultural reading

An unstable influence is easiest to manage when its boundary is made clear at the beginning.

Line 2 · 九二
Classical Chinese
包有鱼,无咎,不利宾。
Close rendering

There is a fish in the wrapping. No blame. Not favorable for guests.

Cultural reading

Some resources are better handled internally; possession does not require immediate display or distribution.

Line 3 · 九三
Classical Chinese
臀无肤,其行次且,厉,无大咎。
Close rendering

The buttocks are without skin; walking is difficult. Danger, but no great blame.

Cultural reading

When strong discomfort is already visible, deepening the connection usually increases risk.

Line 4 · 九四
Classical Chinese
包无鱼,起凶。
Close rendering

No fish in the wrapping. Misfortune rises.

Cultural reading

If something that should be carried loses its container, absence itself becomes a source of trouble.

Line 5 · 九五
Classical Chinese
以杞包瓜,含章,有陨自天。
Close rendering

Wrap a melon with willow leaves; hold refinement within. Something falls from Heaven.

Cultural reading

A valuable possibility may need a period of concealment before exposure helps it form.

Line 6 · 上九
Classical Chinese
姤其角,吝,无咎。
Close rendering

Coming to meet at the horns. Regret, but no blame.

Cultural reading

Encounter at the extreme becomes collision. Reducing further entanglement can matter more than winning the last exchange.

BRING IT BACK TO LIFE

What this can help you notice

Useful for sudden opportunities, attractions, hires, partnerships, or influences whose small beginning may have outsized long-term effects.

A common misreading

Coming to Meet is not a prediction of romance or danger. It asks how a small new influence is bounded before its effects spread.

Keep the classical text and the interpretive layer separate: one is the source, the other is Astro I Ching's explanation of how the source can be read.
