Darkening of the Light

Darkening the light: preserving clarity when the environment cannot safely receive it

Translation approach

The Chinese source stays visible. Where an editorial close rendering is available, it stays near the wording before Astro I Ching expands into cultural interpretation. Why we separate these layers →

CLASSICAL CHINESE

The source anchor

Read the source first. The English layer below remains accountable to these passages rather than replacing them with a simplified verdict.

卦辞 · Judgment
明夷:利艰贞。
Close rendering

Darkening of the Light: favorable to remain correct in difficulty.

《大象》 · Image
明入地中,明夷;君子以莅众,用晦而明。
Close rendering

Brightness enters into Earth: Darkening of the Light. The noble person therefore governs the many by veiling outward brightness while keeping inner clarity.

How to read the middle layer

Close rendering stays near wording and sequence. It is not presented as the only possible translation; the cultural reading below is where Astro I Ching explains image, structure, and practical logic in fuller English.

The source includes “three days” as part of the line image. It is retained without converting it into a contemporary deadline.

ASTRO I CHING · CULTURAL READING

Why this hexagram says what it says

Cultural reading of the image

Fire is buried under Earth. Ming Yi does not require extinguishing one’s light; it asks how light survives when direct display would be damaged.

Cultural reading of the judgment

There are times when public expression does not improve the situation. Preservation may mean lowering visibility, protecting judgment, and waiting for a safer route.

SIX LINES · ONE STORY

How the hexagram develops from bottom to top

Line 1 · 初九
Classical Chinese
明夷于飞,垂其翼。君子于行,三日不食,有攸往,主人有言。
Close rendering

The light is darkened in flight, and the wings hang down. The noble person travels and for three days does not eat. There is somewhere to go, and the host has words of complaint.

Cultural reading

As danger first appears, reducing exposure and leaving quickly can matter more than proving one’s courage.

Line 2 · 六二
Classical Chinese
明夷,夷于左股,用拯马壮,吉。
Close rendering

The light is darkened in the left thigh. Rescue comes through a strong horse. Good fortune.

Cultural reading

Injury does not remove all capacity for action; alternative support can keep local damage from spreading.

Line 3 · 九三
Classical Chinese
明夷于南狩,得其大首,不可疾贞。
Close rendering

Darkening of the Light while hunting in the south: the great leader is captured. One must not be hasty in constancy.

Cultural reading

Meeting the core of darkness still does not justify trying to purge everything at once; overcorrection can create a new reaction.

Line 4 · 六四
Classical Chinese
入于左腹,获明夷之心,出于门庭。
Close rendering

Entering the left side of the belly, one reaches the heart of the darkening and then leaves through the gate and courtyard.

Cultural reading

Once the mechanism of the harmful environment is visible, leaving its controlling range may be the most valuable action.

Line 5 · 六五
Classical Chinese
箕子之明夷,利贞。
Close rendering

The Darkening of the Light of Jizi. Favorable to remain correct.

Cultural reading

In a repressive setting, preserving inner principle can matter more than winning visible recognition.

Line 6 · 上六
Classical Chinese
不明晦,初登于天,后入于地。
Close rendering

Not light but darkness: at first rising to Heaven, afterward falling into Earth.

Cultural reading

A person once placed high can become a source of darkness if power loses self-restraint; light is not guaranteed by position.

BRING IT BACK TO LIFE

What this can help you notice

Useful in hostile, political, or simply unreceptive environments where protecting judgment matters more than displaying it.

A common misreading

Darkening of the Light is not self-betrayal. Sometimes preserving clarity requires reducing visibility until the environment changes.

Keep the classical text and the interpretive layer separate: one is the source, the other is Astro I Ching's explanation of how the source can be read.
