The Clinging

Clinging and clarity: light still needs something worthy to attach to

Translation approach

The Chinese source stays visible. Where an editorial close rendering is available, it stays near the wording before Astro I Ching expands into cultural interpretation. Why we separate these layers →

CLASSICAL CHINESE

The source anchor

Read the source first. The English layer below remains accountable to these passages rather than replacing them with a simplified verdict.

卦辞 · Judgment
离:利贞,亨。畜牝牛,吉。
Close rendering

The Clinging: favorable to remain correct. Success. Raising a cow brings good fortune.

《大象》 · Image
明两作,离;大人以继明照于四方。
Close rendering

Brightness doubled: The Clinging. The great person therefore continues the light and shines it toward the four directions.

How to read the middle layer

Close rendering stays near wording and sequence. It is not presented as the only possible translation; the cultural reading below is where Astro I Ching explains image, structure, and practical logic in fuller English.

ASTRO I CHING · CULTURAL READING

Why this hexagram says what it says

Cultural reading of the image

Fire repeats above Fire. Fire illuminates, but it also depends on fuel; Li therefore joins brightness with the question of attachment.

Cultural reading of the judgment

Seeing clearly does not free a person from conditions. The object of attachment, the quality of that attachment, and the danger of excess heat all remain part of the meaning of light.

SIX LINES · ONE STORY

How the hexagram develops from bottom to top

Line 1 · 初九
Classical Chinese
履错然,敬之无咎。
Close rendering

Footsteps are confused and crossed. Treat them with reverence; no blame.

Cultural reading

At first light, movement can become hurried and confused. Reverence and care prevent enthusiasm from outrunning footing.

Line 2 · 六二
Classical Chinese
黄离,元吉。
Close rendering

Yellow brightness. Great good fortune.

Cultural reading

Centered light does not need to be harsh or dazzling. Steady illumination can be more reliable than brilliance for its own sake.

Line 3 · 九三
Classical Chinese
日昃之离,不鼓缶而歌,则大耋之嗟,凶。
Close rendering

The brightness of the setting sun. If one does not beat the jar and sing, there is the lament of old age. Misfortune.

Cultural reading

Recognizing that a phase is dimming helps prevent temporary decline from being treated as the end of the whole world.

Line 4 · 九四
Classical Chinese
突如其来如,焚如,死如,弃如。
Close rendering

It comes suddenly: blazing, dying, and cast away.

Cultural reading

Sudden flare-up is dangerous because it has not entered a structure capable of carrying it.

Line 5 · 六五
Classical Chinese
出涕沱若,戚嗟若,吉。
Close rendering

Tears flow in streams; sorrow and sighing. Good fortune.

Cultural reading

Concern can protect clarity when it reflects real responsibility rather than panic.

Line 6 · 上九
Classical Chinese
王用出征,有嘉折首,获匪其丑,无咎。
Close rendering

The king uses this to go on campaign. There is honor in striking the leader and taking those who are not of the same kind. No blame.

Cultural reading

At the highest level, illumination becomes discrimination: identifying the primary problem rather than spreading punishment indiscriminately.

BRING IT BACK TO LIFE

What this can help you notice

Useful when clarity, visibility, or enthusiasm is high and the key question is what that light is attached to and whether the attachment can sustain it.

A common misreading

The Clinging is not pure independence or pure illumination. Fire remains bright because it is attached to something that can carry it.

Keep the classical text and the interpretive layer separate: one is the source, the other is Astro I Ching's explanation of how the source can be read.
