Innocence

Innocence and reality: acting without letting fantasy or compulsion replace conditions

天雷无妄Classical Chinese included
Translation approach

The Chinese source stays visible. Where an editorial close rendering is available, it stays near the wording before Astro I Ching expands into cultural interpretation. Why we separate these layers →

CLASSICAL CHINESE

The source anchor

Read the source first. The English layer below remains accountable to these passages rather than replacing them with a simplified verdict.

卦辞 · Judgment
无妄:元亨,利贞。其匪正有眚,不利有攸往。
Close rendering

Innocence: great success; favorable to remain correct. If what is not correct is pursued, there is disaster. Not favorable to have somewhere to go.

《大象》 · Image
天下雷行,物与无妄;先王以茂对时育万物。
Close rendering

Thunder moves under Heaven, and all things accord with Innocence. The former kings therefore nourished the ten thousand things in full accord with the seasons.

How to read the middle layer

Close rendering stays near wording and sequence. It is not presented as the only possible translation; the cultural reading below is where Astro I Ching explains image, structure, and practical logic in fuller English.

ASTRO I CHING · CULTURAL READING

Why this hexagram says what it says

Cultural reading of the image

Thunder moves beneath Heaven, direct and natural. Wu Wang concerns action that does not add unnecessary invention, anxiety, or private manipulation to what is actually present.

Cultural reading of the judgment

Being without falsehood does not mean doing nothing. It means allowing reality, timing, and proper cause to shape action instead of forcing events to match imagination.

SIX LINES · ONE STORY

How the hexagram develops from bottom to top

Line 1 · 初九
Classical Chinese
无妄,往吉。
Close rendering

Without false action, going forward brings good fortune.

Cultural reading

Action without contrivance is often simple and direct; it does not need extra performance to make itself legitimate.

Line 2 · 六二
Classical Chinese
不耕获,不菑畬,则利有攸往。
Close rendering

Do not plow merely for the harvest, nor open new ground only for an immediate crop; then it is favorable to have somewhere to go.

Cultural reading

When every action is calculated only for return, natural order is replaced by constant instrumental thinking.

Line 3 · 六三
Classical Chinese
无妄之灾,或系之牛,行人之得,邑人之灾。
Close rendering

A disaster of innocence: someone ties up a cow; a passerby takes it, and the people of the town suffer the loss.

Cultural reading

Innocence does not guarantee immunity from accident; loss can arise from complex systems without becoming a moral verdict on the person who suffers it.

Line 4 · 九四
Classical Chinese
可贞,无咎。
Close rendering

One can remain correct. No blame.

Cultural reading

Holding to what is real and proper can be enough; adding more activity is not always an improvement.

Line 5 · 九五
Classical Chinese
无妄之疾,勿药有喜。
Close rendering

An illness without false action. Do not use medicine; there will be joy.

Cultural reading

Not every discomfort requires immediate intervention. Over-treatment can become another form of artificial interference.

Line 6 · 上九
Classical Chinese
无妄,行有眚,无攸利。
Close rendering

Without false action, yet going forward brings disaster. Nothing is favorable.

Cultural reading

Even sincere intention creates trouble when timing is wrong and action is forced simply because the motive feels pure.

BRING IT BACK TO LIFE

What this can help you notice

Useful when anxiety is producing extra action and the better test is what reality actually requires rather than what imagination wants to control.

A common misreading

Innocence does not guarantee protection from accident. It concerns freedom from contrivance, not immunity from consequence.

Keep the classical text and the interpretive layer separate: one is the source, the other is Astro I Ching's explanation of how the source can be read.
