Conflict

Conflict without obsession: clarify rules before turning disagreement into total war

Translation approach

The Chinese source stays visible. Where an editorial close rendering is available, it stays near the wording before Astro I Ching expands into cultural interpretation. Why we separate these layers →

CLASSICAL CHINESE

The source anchor

Read the source first. The English layer below remains accountable to these passages rather than replacing them with a simplified verdict.

卦辞 · Judgment
讼:有孚,窒,惕,中吉,终凶。利见大人,不利涉大川。
Close rendering

Conflict: there is trust, but it is blocked. Be cautious. Stopping in the middle brings good fortune; carrying the conflict to the end brings misfortune. Favorable to see the great person; not favorable to cross the great river.

《大象》 · Image
天与水违行,讼;君子以作事谋始。
Close rendering

Heaven and Water move in opposite directions: Conflict. The noble person therefore considers the beginning before undertaking affairs.

How to read the middle layer

Close rendering stays near wording and sequence. It is not presented as the only possible translation; the cultural reading below is where Astro I Ching explains image, structure, and practical logic in fuller English.

ASTRO I CHING · CULTURAL READING

Why this hexagram says what it says

Cultural reading of the image

Heaven rises while Water descends, so the two move in opposite directions. Song describes a state in which aims, interests, or judgments no longer coordinate naturally.

Cultural reading of the judgment

Conflict does not always need a final victory. The text repeatedly links stopping with clarification: returning the dispute to rules, boundaries, and fair process may matter more than fighting to the end.

SIX LINES · ONE STORY

How the hexagram develops from bottom to top

Line 1 · 初六
Classical Chinese
不永所事,小有言,终吉。
Close rendering

Do not prolong the matter. There is some talk, but in the end good fortune.

Cultural reading

A small dispute that stops early does not need to become a long campaign. Ending escalation is already a result.

Line 2 · 九二
Classical Chinese
不克讼,归而逋,其邑人三百户无眚。
Close rendering

Unable to win the conflict, one returns and withdraws. The people of one’s small town, three hundred households, avoid disaster.

Cultural reading

Recognizing that a contest cannot be won and withdrawing can protect ordinary life and relationships without turning retreat into personal defeat.

Line 3 · 六三
Classical Chinese
食旧德,贞厉,终吉。或从王事,无成。
Close rendering

Live on established virtue. Constancy is dangerous, yet in the end good fortune. If serving in a ruler’s affairs, do not claim the achievement.

Cultural reading

Returning to established duties and principles prevents the desire to win from displacing one’s actual role.

Line 4 · 九四
Classical Chinese
不克讼,复即命渝,安贞吉。
Close rendering

Unable to win the conflict, return to what is allotted, change course, and rest in constancy. Good fortune.

Cultural reading

Changing the manner of contention and returning to workable rules can be more valuable than proving that one was right.

Line 5 · 九五
Classical Chinese
讼,元吉。
Close rendering

Conflict brought before proper judgment. Great good fortune.

Cultural reading

When a dispute enters a fair and intelligible process, the standard itself becomes more important than manipulating the outcome.

Line 6 · 上九
Classical Chinese
或锡之鞶带,终朝三褫之。
Close rendering

Even if a ceremonial belt is bestowed, it may be taken away three times before the day is over.

Cultural reading

Even advantages gained through prolonged contention may be unstable. A victory produced by conflict can be difficult to keep.

BRING IT BACK TO LIFE

What this can help you notice

Useful in negotiations and disputes where “winning” may be less important than restoring a process in which disagreement can actually be handled.

A common misreading

Conflict is not a command to fight until one side wins. Ending escalation can be the more intelligent resolution.

Keep the classical text and the interpretive layer separate: one is the source, the other is Astro I Ching's explanation of how the source can be read.
