Approach

Approach and responsibility: what happens when influence comes closer

The Chinese source stays visible. Where an editorial close rendering is available, it stays near the wording before Astro I Ching expands into cultural interpretation. Why we separate these layers →

CLASSICAL CHINESE

The source anchor

Read the source first. The English layer below remains accountable to these passages rather than replacing them with a simplified verdict.

卦辞 · Judgment
临:元亨,利贞。至于八月有凶。
Close rendering

Approach: great success; favorable to remain correct. When the eighth month arrives, there is misfortune.

《大象》 · Image
泽上有地,临;君子以教思无穷,容保民无疆。
Close rendering

Earth above Lake: Approach. The noble person therefore teaches and reflects without exhaustion, and receives and protects the people without limit.

How to read the middle layer

Close rendering stays near wording and sequence. It is not presented as the only possible translation; the cultural reading below is where Astro I Ching explains image, structure, and practical logic in fuller English.

The “eighth month” is retained as a classical temporal phrase rather than converted into a modern calendar prediction.

ASTRO I CHING · CULTURAL READING

Why this hexagram says what it says

Cultural reading of the image

Earth stands over Lake, a picture of coming near, overseeing, and entering another’s field. Lin is not only about opportunity arriving; it is about how one behaves once one is close.

Cultural reading of the judgment

Approach belongs to a cycle. Growth and access are real, but they do not remain at maximum intensity forever, so closeness also carries responsibility for timing and conduct.

SIX LINES · ONE STORY

How the hexagram develops from bottom to top

Line 1 · 初九
Classical Chinese
咸临,贞吉。
Close rendering

Approaching through mutual response. Constancy brings good fortune.

Cultural reading

The quality of approach changes with motive; nearness born from right intention is not the same as intrusion.

Line 2 · 九二
Classical Chinese
咸临,吉无不利。
Close rendering

Approaching through mutual response. Good fortune; nothing is unfavorable.

Cultural reading

When both sides genuinely respond, coming closer creates real room for action.

Line 3 · 六三
Classical Chinese
甘临,无攸利。既忧之,无咎。
Close rendering

Sweet or ingratiating approach. Nothing is favorable. Once one becomes concerned about it, no blame.

Cultural reading

Approach by charm alone is unstable. Recognizing the problem and adjusting can still correct the relationship.

Line 4 · 六四
Classical Chinese
至临,无咎。
Close rendering

Arriving in full approach. No blame.

Cultural reading

Good approach arrives in the right measure: neither distant nor invasive.

Line 5 · 六五
Classical Chinese
知临,大君之宜,吉。
Close rendering

Approaching with wisdom: fitting for a great ruler. Good fortune.

Cultural reading

The higher the position, the more judgment matters in deciding how to approach others.

Line 6 · 上六
Classical Chinese
敦临,吉无咎。
Close rendering

Approaching with generosity and depth. Good fortune; no blame.

Cultural reading

At the end, lasting care and generosity matter more than the posture of authority.

BRING IT BACK TO LIFE

What this can help you notice

Useful when access, authority, or opportunity is increasing and closeness itself creates new obligations.

A common misreading

Approach is not automatic good fortune. Greater access increases responsibility and eventually reaches a turning point.

Keep the classical text and the interpretive layer separate: one is the source, the other is Astro I Ching's explanation of how the source can be read.
